japanese symbol on bottom of vase

By Jennifer Walker from Independence, KS USA on August 21, 2005 in Japanese Symbols Characters

I have an old Japanese vase..it says Japan on the bottom plus has a symbol that i will try to translate to the best of my ability..it is in a square, has a line across the top, then an upside down capital A and then next to that is a weird symbol that is a vertical line with an equal sign = at the top of it and an M at the bottom...could you help with this? I would just like to find the name of the pottery company or whoever made this vase..it is very pretty and was just wondering how old it is...
Thank you,
Jennifer Walker
