Snake Found, Is it a Cottonmouth Snake?
By Julie Healy from Tomball, Texas on August 22, 2005 in Identifying Texas Snakes
While walking we saw a small snake dead in the middle of the road. We have had reports of cottonmouth bites to dogs in our neighborhood and wanted to know if this snake might be one. It was a dark green color with a diamond pattern on it's back. The diamonds were dark - almost black, with a yellowish outline to them. The only pictures that I have seen are of adult cottonmouths, but the description said that the young are more colorful. The head was small, but angled out slightly before angling in again.
I can try and get a picture of it on my digital to send to you. We have seen larger ones that were alive, but it was too dark to get a good look at them. One raised its body up in the air, then took off after we passed it. We have a large drainage ditch running through our neighborhood and the road that is next to it is where they have been located.
Need any other information? If you can help, it would be appreciated. |
