when prompted,entring the directions it comes up bad command or file name

I followed the directions on how to formatte my computer.I made the back-up disks, when told to enter the directions for the MS-DOS screen it says that it has a Bad command or file name.I can switch file names but not to do the formatting.I need help on getting past this minor problem.My computer recently came from a University and hasn't been formatted and it has some from of block on it, can you help with that to. Any information would be beneficial. Thanks Tina
