How do I avoid explaining my Bipolar disorder to my friends?

By Jean from San Francisco, CA on October 13, 2005 in Bipolar Support Groups

I am in my mid-30's and have only recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Prior to treatment I had become adept at hiding my episodes from all by husband and best freind. To the rest of our friends my outward behavior has not changed but for some very marked exceptions; due to my reactions to the medications I can no longer drink alcohol, take any over-the-counter drugs & must avoid caffine. While I have never been a big user of any of the above it is still bringing up questions that I can avoid only to a point.
While I have told a couple of people I trust about my diagnosis, I am not willing to go public with the info. The obvious answers to my questions seem to be either dodge or lie. Neither are an option for me. Anybody out there have other choices - any creative ideas?

Thanks for your help,
Dodger
